Niloo KhanI am a female Scottish director with Italian and Pakistani roots and a strong interest in new writing: particularly in bringing a diversity of modern Scottish stories to the stage. In 2019 I graduated from Napier University’s MFA in Directing, under the tutelage of former Lyceum Artistic Director Mark Thomson and NTS playwright May Sumbwanyambe. Last year I developed two new plays: James Harker’s Land’s End, which was shortlisted for the 2018 Theatre503 Playwriting Prize; and Traverse-Fifty-winner Mikey Burnett’s In Her Corner which I directed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019, receiving four star reviews from both The Scotsman and All Edinburgh Theatre.
I’m currently working on two projects: Crossed Lines, Music and Story by Anne Wood and Director Kath Burlinson which has been honoured to have the NTS starter fund for research and development into the stories of Scottish and Pakistani heritage for this project; and Don’t Make Tea by Rob Drummond directed by Birds of Paradise’s Robert Gale, to be staged in October 2020 at the Traverse Theatre. The latter project was offered after the TDS Sector Meeting with the industry in discussion about the opportunities for directors in Scotland. Birds of Paradise made a pledge that evening and I feel very honoured to have benefited from the meeting and made a connection to a brilliant company that I have been dreaming of working with for a long time! I am really excited to understand their artistic processes and approaching the delicate subject of disability in the most open way in their rehearsal rooms and to their audience. |
